As soon as the Swaledale Festival programme hits my inbox, I always make a beeline for their world music concerts. I’ve loved the unique rhythms of all types of African music ever since being introduced to them as a teenager through Paul Simon’s Graceland and then by Verity Sharpe’s excellent Late Junction on Radio 3.
So an evening listening to The Ganda Boys at St Andrew’s Church Grinton on 27 May will be a real treat. They’ve worked with many artists since collaborating on the 2009 BBC TV series MOSES JONES and for the Festival will be joined by the London based Echo Vocal Ensemble. Expect an evening full of heart and soul, poetry and energy!
Talking of energy, The Ganda Boys are also leading a singing workshop earlier in the day at Reeth Memorial Hall. No singing experience or ability to read music is needed; just a willingness to try something new in a relaxed and fun environment.
I’m very much looking forward to their concert. But don’t just take my word for it. Apparently Stevie Wonder is a big fan, appearing in public with them in 2019 to support their charitable work in Uganda!
