St. Gregory's Church, Bedale

St. Gregory

St. Gregory's, Bedale

There was said to be a church on the site in 1085. Although this early building suffered badly in the 'Harrowing of the North' in 1069, some Saxon carving can still be seen in the crypt below the chancel and in the nave.

There is a rare fortified tower - unique in the north of England - from 1330, built to keep out the marauding Scots. There are also some unusually high-quality Victorian stained glass windows.

Postcode - DL8 1AF

There is plenty of car parking nearby in Bedale High Street.

Interval refreshments served in adjacent hall which also contains the toilets.
